Compare a Masters to a Bachelors

If you want to study a particular subject in greater depth than you were able to during your Bachelors then a Masters degree might be the right option for you. But how does a Masters degree compare to a Bachelors?

A Bachelors degree or first degree is undertaken as an undergraduate. After this, some students choose to go on to take a post-graduate course leading to a Masters degree.

What are the main differences between a Bachelors and a Masters degree?

The main differences between a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree are as follows:

  • The Masters is focused on one specific area of a broader subject, giving students a larger amount of more specialist knowledge
  • The Masters is more flexible in terms of modules and study options
  • The Masters is also more intense, advanced and faster-paced
  • The Masters requires a higher level of English in the written assignments
  • Masters are taught in smaller groups
  • It is cheaper to take a Masters than a Bachelors.

A full-time masters can be either one or two years in duration. With so many job applicants possessing a first degree, having a Masters can greatly improve job prospects.

The main difference you will notice is the need for far more self-direction and independent study than you will have experienced as an undergraduate. So you will need greater self-discipline and time management abilities.

Another major difference is that for many Masters programmes you will be required to produce a dissertation that may be 15,000 words long, far longer than anything you would have prepared for your Bachelors degree where the limit tends to be more like 5,000.

Consider these factors before making your decision to embark on a Masters degree course.
